Tree post

My tree has changed sooooo much. Before it had pretty flowers and now it has small peaches! Maybe one day they will be big peaches that are edible. It also grew LOTS of leaves, as you can see.

In LA, we are reading Wish Tree, and names are a big thing for the characters so I am going to talk about it a little. My name is Jenna, and I got it because my parents wanted a simple and an easily spelt name. Jenna means white shadow, white wave, small bird, and occasionally translates to heaven.

My tree’s name is Peach. I chose that because it is a peach tree, and I wanted a similar name.

I took a picture of a small bird near my tree, and I named it Caramel because the colors on it were caramel looking.

An optimist is someone who looks on the bright side and is always positive. A pessimist is the opposite- it’s someone who sees the cup half empty and is negative. It’d say overall I am a pessimist person because sometimes I am pretty negative. At all of my golf tournaments, I am always thinking I won’t win, and I think the worst that could happen thinking it would lower my expectations, (it doesn’t) and for other things like when I’m taking tests and quizzes I think I will do horribly when I probably won’t.

So that’s it, bye!!

Save the trees!!!!

Hi! In LA we read about Smokey the bear, so here is a summary of the story in my own words.

Story of Smokey the bear.

It started in the Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico. That Forest was the best, there were many many animals and tree’s enjoying their life. That is until a man who was smoking a cigarette was careless, and forgot to put out the fire! It started as a single flame, but grew to be a humongous forest fire. Firefighters came to help, but the fire couldn’t be stopped. Eventually after a long time the fire burned out. All of the animals and tree’s got burned off except for one little bear cub, Smokey. Smokey traveled to the Washington zoo and became an inspiration. He spreaded advice that could provide forest fires and became an important icon. The end!

Here are some interesting facts about trees, and their role.

  1. Earth has more than 60,000 known tree species
  2. Trees are the longest living organism and don’t die of old age
  3. Trees are able to communicate and defend themselves
  4. Trees block noise by reducing sound waves
  5. Trees produce most of the oxygen humans and animals breathe
  6. Trees have been around for the last 10% of Earth’s history
  7. Trees release chemicals that make people happy
  8. There are 442 times as many trees on Earth as people
  9. Trees absorb pollutants through their leaves
  10.  There would be no rain without trees

After going through some tree facts, I made a poster to spread the word about not cutting down trees. Here it is!⬇️

So, why is it important to learn about trees and forests and the benefits we receive from them? Well, we need to know their importance and know how some of the things we have come from. For example, oxygen.

Who conserves forests? I think that some workers do, but in certain places, it is every citizens job to preserve forests.

I will try to help the trees by educating others about the importance of trees and myself, I can at least try to prevent people from cutting down trees.

How can I encourage others to do the same? I can again educate people about how helpful trees are and how you should not harm them. And tell them we would not be alive if it weren’t for trees.

That’s it, bye!!

Trees in literature

Hi! So in LA we are reading short stories about trees and writing about them. The book I chose is called Verdi and the author is Janell Cannon. The main character is Verdi. The plot is that basically Verdi is yellow with stripes and doesn’t want to be green like the other snakes. Eventually he became green but he learned the color doesn’t change who you are. Trees play a role by being the snake’s habitat. The conflict is that Verdi doesn’t want to be green but he will eventually turn green. The outcome is that Verdi does become a green snake but accepts himself. Trees are used in their story by being a prop kind of. The message is, even if you don’t look how you like to look, it doesn’t change who you are. Readers should learn that it doesn’t matter how you look, but your personality does. That’s it, bye!

Here is a pic of the cover

Tree Books

Hi! In LA class we made tree books. Basically they are tree shaped books, (see pics for example) and inside we put poems and paragraphs of our writings. We made them by visiting Ms. Gignoux (https://gignouxart.com/). We started out by doing screen painting, which was painting parts of our class poem (everyone made a poem about the tree we adopted then added it all together) onto some painted paper. Next, we did akua ink printing with plants, although I didn’t get to do it, it looked really cool and I got to use them for the next thing we did. That carries on to the next thing, collaging. We took the akua ink plants, and cut them to fit our tree books. It was really fun and looked cool at the end. Lastly we put two or three envelopes to our tree book and collaged those too!

Overall I really enjoyed doing this project because it was different from most things we do in school. It was fun and exciting. All of the steps were something new that I tried.

Here is a copy of my “Branches” writing that I made about my goals for myself and my goals for the world.

Branches, Reaching Toward the Sky

My Wish Tree

By: Jenna Kim

  1. Win one golf world championship. This goal is important because I’ve been trying to do this for 6 years. Also because if I do win, then all my hard work will pay off.
  2. Meet new friends. This is important to me because when I meet new friends, I can be happier. And I would like friends that I can have for the rest of my life.
  3. Find new hobbies. This is important because I would like to find new hobbies I will continue to do forever. Also because hobbies are really fun and I meet new people.
  4. Get all A’s for the rest of the time I’m in school until college. This is important to me  because if I have good grades, I will get into a good college. Also because it will make my family proud of me.
  5. Go to an IVY league school. This goal is important to me because if I do, my parents will be very proud. Also because I’ve been wanting to since I was very young.
  6. Play golf for college. This is important to me because I love golf and hope to do it more in the future. And because even when I’m in college I want to still win tournaments, because I enjoy that.
  7. Go to medical school. This goal is important to me because if I do my parents will be proud of me. Also because this will help me be a doctor.
  8. Become a doctor. This goal is important to me because this will help me get money for the future. Also because I’ve been wanting to be a doctor for as long as I can remember.
  9. Be happy. This is important because if I’m not happy then life will be depressing. Also because being happy will make my life fun and enjoyable.
  10. Have a family. That is important because I feel like I will be happier with kids. Also because just being a doctor all day every day will be boring so I want something exciting happening.

I hope the world will find peace with every country and never have wars and should get rid of violence. Also one day hopefully there will be no racist people or any discrimination. Everyone should be treated completely equal no matter how they look. Also I hope no one will be in poverty, and the minimum wage will be more than enough to support someone. I also hope that people will make more biodegradable things to be recycled. That will really help our environment. My last thing is I hope there will be no (or very little) pollution. Pollution is harmful to animals and that’s not good.

Now this is the Salute to my Roots writing that I did. Basically it’s everyone that I think has made an impact on my life!

SALUTE TO MY ROOTS!

Jenna Kim

My mom has made a huge impact on my life. She has taught me that not everything is so important in life. For example, if I don’t do well in a golf tournament, my mom is the first person to cheer me up and say it doesn’t matter. Similarly, my mom was the one to introduce me to all of my favorite hobbies that I will continue to do hopefully for a long time. Instead of doing things for herself, she does things for me. She always puts everyone else first as well. My mom always makes time for my brother and me, and always thinks about us. She does so much for me and I really appreciate it.

My dad has made an equal amount of an impact on my life. He inspires me so much. He is a doctor at Duke and went to good colleges, which is exactly what I want to do in life as well. If it weren’t for him, I would have had a much harder time deciding what I want to do. Not only that, he is a great parent. He works so hard at everything, he doesn’t get mad, and helps me when I need it.  He is really funny, and I love when he sends me funny photos and videos. It is so cool to have such a successful person as one of my parents. I am so glad he is my dad!!

Even though I don’t see my Grandma (on my mom’s side) very often, she has made a difference in my life. She has a great personality, and is the nicest person I know. Whenever I find out she is coming, I get so excited. I love it when she bakes for me, and I love to help her. That is one of my favorite  things to do with her, and I will keep those memories forever. I am just glad she still chooses to travel all the way from Toronto to North Carolina. She always does fun things with me and she is so hard working. She will do anything to make my brother and I happy. I am so lucky to have her as my Grandma!!!

I chose to write about my first grade teacher, Mrs. Suggs. Even though I was only in her class for one year, I will always remember her. So far Mrs. Suggs is my favorite teacher I’ve ever had, and I’ve had close to 30 teachers. She taught me and my brother and we both agree she is the nicest person ever. She loves teaching so much and I love seeing all her joy. (She’s been teaching for decades!) Everyone I know loves Mrs. Suggs. She taught me to always be kind and think about others. I can’t describe what she has done for me but everything she did was amazing. The fact that I still remember this 6 years later means she meant a lot to me and made an impact on my life.

If you go back to the beginning of this post, you’ll see that I described how I made the tree books. If you want to see what they look like, then here it is!!!

MY NEW PUPPY!!!

Hi!!!! I have exciting news. I got a puppy!🐶! If you didn’t know, I have been wanting a small puppy for 6 years. And I got one! He is a teacup  toy poodle, and his name is Bailey.🥰 He is the perfect puppy, because I am allergic to dogs and he is fully hypoallergenic. He is two months old (I got him on sat) and he’s sooooo small! Right now he is 2 pounds and when he’s full grown he will be 3 pounds. He is energetic, but later in the day he gets cuddly, and falls asleep on me a lot.🥰 I’m super excited! Here are some pics, warning, they are SUPER CUTE🐶❤️💕

(make sure to look at all of the photos!)

Fingerprint project

Hi! In LA we are doing a project about fingerprints. We found out what type they are! So I will be telling you some facts about fingerprints.

1. Even if there is completely identical twins, they will have different fingerprints!

2. This is very similar to the last one, but no one in the entire world has the same set of fingerprints as you. they are each different and unique.

3. Some people don’t even have any fingerprints! that is caused by a rare genetic condition.

4. koalas also have fingerprints!!

5. Even when your finger grows, your fingerprints will stay the exact same.

6. fingerprints can show which drugs you have taken.

7. Fingerprints are VERY deep into your finger and is very difficult to remove.

8. one time there was a murder, and he left his fingerprints on a bottle. The police got every single persons’ fingerprints in the entire town.(over 16). Finally, when they got to the 46,253th person, they found the killer.

these are the sites I used:

Ten Facts About Fingerprints

and

Facts about Fingerprints

One thing we did was putting our fingerprints on paper, (we put graphite on our fingers and then out tape on) and found what type of fingerprints we have! Here are mine. 👇🏻

Stock Market Game

We are doing the stock market game ( the goal is to earn the most money by investing in the stock market, you can’t sell you stock until the end of the game.) because 1, it is part of the book we are reading (called westing game), and 2, because it will help us learn more about the stock market. In the book we are reading, the main character is Turtle and she loves money and feels like the goal is to get the most money, so she buys stocks to get more money. Our company name is JM (because the people in the group are Jenna and Monica). The stocks we invested in are Chewy, because in quarantine people are buying pets and Chewy basically sells pet foods, so we thought that people would be buying those things. Netflix, we invested in Netflix because there are a lot of shows coming out, so it would be a wise investment. Also, people may not want to go to the movie theater due to COVID, so they just watch Netflix instead! Similarly, we invested in Disney because, for the same reason, there are many new shows coming up and people are excited to see those. We also invested in Starbucks because I noticed a lot of people getting coffee now that the lockdown is over. Also, who doesn’t like coffee? (With the exception of kids) Another company we invested in is American Airlines. We did that because since lockdown is over, people are wanting to see their family after months and months or being quarantined, so they fly American Airlines to get there. Our last company we invested in is Airbnb. We chose that because the quarantine is going to end soon, and people are going to travel which means they will rent houses, or possibly hotels, on Airbnb. -Jenna & Monica

Golf tournament

Hi! I played in a golf tournament the past weekend and got second place. I didn’t play well at all (it was super wet) but it’s okay! I lost to a 17 year old so it made me feel better.😅 I’m changing my swing right now so I may not play that well, fortunately it’s coming along pretty well! I have another tournament at the of December and it’s a big one, so hopefully I do well.😁 Anyways, I attached a photo of the top 4 finishers. (They made me take off my mask for the photo but I put it back on)

Thanksgiving

Hi, these are a 10 things I’m thankful for.

Family, Food, Healthcare workers, Friends, Good health, Golf workers for allowing me to golf, My parents, Doctors, my house, teachers

This year we invited our grandparents, they were already in town so we just had them come over. We wore masks the whole time, and a few days before got the COVID test and came back negative. Usually we invite our cousins and those people but couldn’t this year. We still made a lot of food though! I played some golf with my grandpa because he likes to golf a lot!
